Last night I had the pleasure of attending the 15th annual Washington Technology Industry Achievement awards. After a night of great conversation, I was excited to have visited one event with so many intelligent entrepreneurs, developers, and marketers. One of the many highlights of the evening was to see Amazon win well-deserved recognition for their amazing Amazon Web Services platform. Having used the platform myself for various personal projects, I couldn’t agree more with the WTIA.
The award for Breakthrough Startup of the year was given to VHoldr – an innovative local technology company that enables its users to broadcast in 1080p video using a head mounted camera. Built for activity, this durable HD camera can take footage in extreme conditions you’d feel nervous taking a disposable camera. According to their specifications, the camera also uses a dual-beam laser system to help the user key in on action areas. While this is all kinds of impressive, I could not help but think of this technology’s application in marine life (Dr. Evil, I’m talking to you).
Another interesting company at the event was Massachustes-based WindPole Ventures. WindPole provides highly accurate windspeed information vital to ISO’s, governments, and windfarm operators. The data gathered is vital to the efficiency of windfarm operations where accurate forecasts can make or break the profitability of a windfarm. By utilizing existing cell and data towers, WindPole’s technology allows high-accuracy, realtime data to be transmitted via modem to data centers around the country. My wife, who’s patience is never-ending, stood by as I spent a good 15 minutes talking to a WindPole engineer about the software and hardware that go into this great idea.
I’m already looking forward to next year’s event. Oh did I mention that I received the best schwag ever? How about a USB powered desk fan. Sweet.
