Can’t wait until Don & Betty Draper grace your late summer Sunday nights again? Mattel is adding to the hype surrounding the fourth season premier of the hit series, “Mad Men” and will be releasing a line of Barbie’s styled after the show. Mattel plans to release their collection of Barbie & Ken dolls after your four favorite characters, Don and Betty Draper, Roger Sterling, and Joan Holloway.
Lionsgate, the studio behind AMC’s “Mad Men” has leased the rights to Mattel to produce the first premium-price collectors’ series for adults called the Barbie Fashion Model Collection. Each doll has a suggested retail price of $74.95 and will be available in limited quantities (only 7,000-10,000 copies each!) This marks the first collection of dolls from Mattel that will be made out of Silkstone, a material similar to the weight and feel of porcelain.
With the release of the “Mad Men” inspired Barbie’s, this will be yet another product aimed at highlighting the lifestyle and phenomenon that the popular 1960’s based show has inspired. The Barbie’s will join several magazine covers and calendars, an entire “Mad Men” dedicated episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and a category on the game show “Jeopardy.”
Don’t count on receiving Barbie & Ken sized cigarettes or martini glasses though, the dolls are only coming with “appropriate” era accessories, think: hats, overcoats, and pearls.
Want to purchase? The “Mad Men” collection will be available to consumers July 2010 via amctv.com and barbiecollector.com.
