Within an hour of waking up I find myself tweeting, facebooking, blogging, emailing, posting on forums, talking on IM, texting and occasionally even taking a phone call. Technology has done more than just break the barriers of communication, it has heralded a new era that brings us one step closer to a collective global consciousness – One mind that’s interconnected at many points.
What has been the goal of spiritual leaders, mystics and religious icons for millennia is finally being realized in our generation through technology. When I ask people why they use social media so frequently on a personal basis, it always boils down to the unexplainable comfort of being connected to others and sharing in a collective pool of information, entertainment and emotion.
This intrinsic need to be connected is built in to the human psyche and is the common denominator between most religious and spiritual practices throughout existence. It is widely believed that in order to achieve enlightenment, growth, salvation or happiness it must be done through collective thought, prayer, meditation or whichever label is applicable to your individual beliefs. By focusing our energy in harmony with others, we’re able to transcend the physical and evolve our mindshare to a higher place. In recent years, advanced quantum physics has lead to affirmations that this interlinked collective consciousness may very well be the basis of all existence through the M theory (or string theory).
This new found technological consciousness may be a little primitive in its infancy (I don’t think the great yogis envisioned the path to spiritual enlightenment being related to what I had for breakfast or which cat picture I find most hilarious), however we’re communicating instantly with huge networks of people, regardless of location, language or time. I can’t help but feel technology will play a big part in man’s evolution, spirituality and consciousness as it continues to evolve.
