Influence Sound: Maps & Atlases

Written by Pete Wright

I am always on the lookout for fresh, intriguing, and unique bands and recently had the privilege of witnessing one. I was at a concert for one of my other favorites, the Scottish Frightened Rabbit, and opening for them was a band I had never heard of: Maps & Atlases. Never sure what to expect with smaller opening bands, I wasn't paying too much attention. But once the lights went off and they started playing, the whole place grew quiet.

These four strangers took the stage and played their instruments like I've never seen before, exhibiting incredible musicianship and talent. Simply, I was blown away. I first purchased their two smaller EPs, and eagerly awaited the release of their first full length, which came out this last Tuesday, titled Perch Patchwork. While more toned down than their previous material, it is a wonderfully focused album, coming it at just under 40 minutes. I am happy to say I have had it on heavy rotation all week. I highly recommend checking them out and supporting this fine band from Chicago. And if you are in the Seattle area, make sure to see them live on the 15th of this month at the Vera Project!
