Today, at the f8 Developer conference, Zuckerberg et. al released some pretty amazing new Facebook features. One of the most compelling is the redesign of Profiles, transmuting them into what will now be known as “Timeline.” Basically, Timeline takes all the data since one first registered for Facebook and places all the personal content (photos, statuses, likes, videos) into a linear timeline. One can even fill in years missing in the timeline since birth.
After creating my own Timeline (thanks to this TechCruch hack), I was surprised and delighted (and embarrassed) as to what the Timeline generated. The Timeline is totally editable as well. I wonder how many versions of my “history” will appear in the coming months. Overall, I’m not ashamed to say that it was quite the emotional experience to view the past six years in this way. Talk about engagement!
Overall, it seems that Facebook FTL jumped themselves into their own galaxy. Far, far, far away from Google+ with Twitter appearing only as stars. But Google+ did fight back this week, by placing a huge blue arrow on Google.com to remind folks about their Google+ accounts.
