Today is foursquare day! April 16 = 4/4^2 = 4sqDay. Get it?
Along with their very own social media holiday, foursquare has even more reason to celebrate today after announcing a major company milestone: the 3-year-old startup has surpassed 20 million users with a total of 2 billion check-ins!
In true foursquare fashion, the 20 million number was confirmed through a 4sqDay badge, which is being awarded to anyone who uses the app to check-in today, Monday, April 16.
The social network’s holiday was officially declared in 2010 by foursquare fans from Tampa Bay, and is now recognized by over twenty-one cities, including the start-up’s hometown, New York City. Last year Mayor Bloomberg hand-delivered the proclamation to foursquare founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai announcing April 16 as foursquare day.
To celebrate the holiday, many businesses are offering Specials. Here are just a few:
- In the US, Bing is giving away Nokia Lumia 900 Windows® Phones to 6 random winners who follow Bing on foursquare and share a check-in with the #Bing4sq hashtag to twitter.
- In Tampa (where 4sqDay began!), McDonald’s and Ikea are both running specials.
- In Portland, Pizza Schmizza will be giving out free slices of pizza, along with dozens of other local businesses.
- In Ljubljana, Nokia will be providing free snacks and drinks at the #4sqDay party.
