Fall in Seattle generally means a substantial drop in temperature and the return of rain.
But it also means the best season of all is on its way. That’s right, winter is coming. And with winter’s arrival comes deep powder turns and backcountry explorations. As a long-time snowboarder and recent splitboard convert, I’m always checking out the latest and greatest gear for winter. Here are my picks for the upcoming season.
2014 Backcountry Essentials
A. Spark R&D Afterburner Splitboard Bindings – Built for big mountain riding, the Afterburner features the new Tesla system that makes transitioning from uphill to downhill quick and easy.
B. K2 Ultra Split Splitboard – Brand new to the splitboard game, the K2 Ultra Split is light on weight and big on float. A lighter board means saving energy and getting up the hill faster, which is what every splitboarder wants.
C. Dakine ABS Signal 25L – Avalanches are a real threat in the backcountry. The built-in ABS airbag system gives you peace of mind while exploring the BC. Plus, there are plenty of pockets to keep all of your gear organized.
D. Black Diamond Expedition Poles – Lightweight yet strong, these poles can endure a beating without fail during backcountry excursions.
E. G3 Alpinist High Traction Splitboard Climbing Skins – These all-new skins will get you up the steeps so you can lay some tracks in the deep. These skins should be a nice addition to any splitboard set up since nothing is more frustrating than sliding back down the hill after a steep climb.
