A Few of My Favorite Things

A few things I've seen that make me happy.

Written by Pete Wright

It’s been a bit since I’ve written a shameless promotion post, so I’ll compile a ‘best of’ and make sure I post all of my favorites of the past couple months and beyond.

01. AIAIAI Headphones

I’ve been on the lookout for my next pair of over-the-headphones and I think I’ve finally found them. They seem constructed well and I love that red coiled cord. It also looks like I could work late into the night and not feel the weight of these on my ears. At $250, I’ll have to work on a few more logos and brands to justify the cost, but one day…

02. LEGO ‘Back to the Future’ Edition

Besides being my favorite film ever, my younger son is really on a LEGO kick right now, so I ordered this beauty in hopes of both of us putting it together over the holidays. Well, I think he was a tad more excited to build it than I was, because 40 minutes later, we have a complete DeLorean! I guess I’ll just have to take it apart sometime and re-build it myself to get that experience… It included both Marty and Doc—Doc’s hair is so classic. LEGO did a great job with the details and the car converts into every one featured in each movie. Bonus: the labels are screen printed on—heavy!

03. Pocket Microscope

I’ve always wanted to be able to examine the details in everyday things and now I think it’s possible. Simple in function and design, it just looks awesome—and at the price point 0f under $10, it doesn’t really matter if it works well or not . ‘Nuff said.

04. Queens of the Stone Age — …Like Clockwork

The latest album from the L.A. desert rocking band, this one is definitely one I’ve had on repeat this past 6 months. There’s no mistaking this sound for something else. Standout tracks are ‘I Sat By the Ocean’, ‘The Vampyre of Time and Memory’, ‘If I Had a Tail’, ‘I Appear Missing’ and ‘…Like Clockwork’. I can never tire of those songs. The artwork is equally amazing, very well-thought-out and dark. The vinyl issues are great, I have all three limited editions so far. Long live Queens!

05. Beach Volley

We recently got a ping pong table here at the office—which has been amazing—and we were on the lookout for some nice paddles. I stumbled upon this great looking set, only to find that they were for the beach. Oh well, they still have a great look to them and would be sure to please at the beach. I think that cork ball would just get better too, holding all that salt water. But…at $140, it doesn’t seem like I’ll be owning this set soon.

06. Vans Brenton Boot

Vans and Vibram have teamed up to produce this classic boot for the winter. I love the mixture of textures here and can’t wait to own a pair. That hit of blue is really nice, great contrast to the upper and white Vibram sole. Vans has really made a comeback of late.

07. Pencil by FiftyThree

Finally, a stylus with some style. Meant to pair with the popular iPad app, Paper, this tool is such a natural extension of the iPad. Features like palm rejection (you can rest your palm on the device and it will not detect it), erasing (just like a pencil) and blending, this tool rocks. I really love the carpenter pencil look of this and choice of material is spot-on.
